New Year Realities:

New Year’s Resolutions don’t work.  In this article we look at why not, and what to do about it!

And right now, we’ll set goals that WORK

 By Joanne Mansell.

What are 5 RESOLUTIONS you set for yourself in 2013 or you were thinking of setting for 2014?

Or, what are 5 things that you would like to achieve this coming year.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

How do you FEEL about these 5 things?

Chances are you are like many others who set resolutions and break them.

Are you setting your goals too high?  If you set a particular income goal, what % increase is that?  Is it possible?

You must believe it to achieve it!

Why don’t we stick to our "resolutions"?  Quite often it’s because they don’t relate to the things we’d really like to do.

The resolutions are often about things we “should” do (like giving up smoking or some other negative habit) without a bigger vision to support them.  With the smoking example a big picture would be getting fit, and what it means to you – perhaps having more energy to spend with your family.

So, what really drives you?  What would you like to do with your life?  What is important to you?

The BIG picture….. what 5 things would you like to do “someday” - what is on your "bucket list"?

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Notice how (if at all) you are taking steps towards these “someday” goals in your Resolutions.

To get started, let’s get some momentum happening from last year.

Whether you achieved what you wanted or didn’t achieve anything, it is useful to notice what happened last year!

This exercise is about “sharpening the saw”.  Taking a few moments to catch your breath and reflect on the year that was, and more importantly the year that will be.

What will be the 5 best things about 2013? And when to you expect them to occur?

Remember the principles of SMARTIES goal setting - Specific, Measurable, Aligned, Realistic, Timed, Inspirational, Emotional, Stated Positively/successful.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

A useful principle in goal setting is SUCCESS.  Let’s have a look at it now.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. PRINCIPLES

Stated Positively                  I want to....

Precise and positive desired outcome.

Remember clarity and precision

Undeniable Reality                   I know this to be true when...

How you will know when you have achieved the goal?

Be sensory specific - how will it feel or look or sound?

This will help identify the means to achieve the outcome.

Context                                  The places and times I want this...

What situations?  What contexts?

Eg when we are behind, or on the last hole, when I’m against someone better than me.

Congruent                                            I want this because...

For what purpose do you want this goal?

Is that congruent with my personal values?

Ecological                                             Does any part of me object to this?

Check for harmony with “you” - that there is no resistance from within yourself, or outer resistance from others to the desired changes.

Self Initiated                                         How can I take charge of doing this?

Ensure you can take charge of creating and maintaining the change, rather than change being imposed from outside.  What can you do to get your outcome - for example establish the old behaviour as the trigger for the new one!

Strategy                                                What steps must I take to achieve the goal?

Develop an action plan!  Include all timeframes from a day to a year or more!

“Resolutions” can be fun and easy.

Even if you have never kept a resolution in your life – you can start this year.  The difference is in setting resolutions or goals which drive you and are attainable.

You can create the life you want, and the results in your business, your fitness or any other area of your life.

The points in this article should give you some starting points on what goals to set.

The most important thing is to spend a few minutes thinking about goals and the coming year.  Even if you don’t fill in these exercises or make some resolutions you have at least thought about where you want to go in the coming year.

But wait!  You can’t go yet.  You need to make some decisions!

What next?  What do I need to DO to achieve these goals and make my resolution a reality? These can be:

·        Taking actions

·        Making decisions

·        Changing Habits

·        Seeking information or experience

·        Enlisting support

·        Hiring a Life Coach (call for your free session!)

I (your name)                                   commit to undertaking the following actions by the specified dates:

ACTION                                                                                 DATE

1.
